Properties
:It is a white to off-white crystalline powder. Melting point:123 ~ 131℃, easily soluble in water, ethanol, propylene glycol, ethyl acetate, slightly soluble in oil, hard to dissolve in chloroform, acetone, etc.

ApplicationsBronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol) is a low-toxicity, high-activity broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent (effective at pH 4–9), widely used across multiple industries for reliable sterilization and preservation. In industrial applications, Bronopol serves as an effective biocide, algaecide, and slime-control agent for industrial circulating cooling water systems (recommended dosage 50–200 mg/L for controlling sulfate-reducing bacteria), and is also used for pulp preservation in paper mills and plywood production. It is compatible with metalworking fluids, coatings, and wood preservatives, providing long-lasting microbial control at only 0.1%–0.5% dosage and maintaining excellent surfactant compatibility.

In personal care products, Bronopol is an approved cosmetic preservative (maximum allowed level 0.1%), suitable for shampoos, lotions, wet wipes, toothpaste, and more. At 0.01%–0.05%, it effectively inhibits Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as yeasts, and shows strong antifungal synergy when combined with parabens, with good stability below 60 °C.

In agriculture, Bronopol is used as a high-efficiency seed treatment. A 1000 mg/L soaking solution for 72 hours achieves ≥93% control against rice bakanae disease. It also helps prevent cotton blackarm disease and bacterial blight, with a recommended dosage of 10 kg per ton of seeds and soaking for 24–96 hours for significant protection.

In the petrochemical industry, Bronopol functions as an oilfield biocide for injection water systems, drilling fluids, completion fluids, and production operations. It rapidly suppresses sulfate-reducing bacteria, sessile bacteria, and corrosion-inducing microorganisms, reducing pipeline corrosion, scaling, and acidification, thereby improving recovery efficiency and extending equipment life with excellent stability and compatibility.

Additionally, Bronopol can be used in topical disinfectants, oral medicine preservatives, leather protection, textile antibacterial finishing, odor control, fruit and vegetable preservation, and HVAC circulating water treatment. It complies with GB/T 1601 standards, is non-irritating at low concentrations (≤0.5%), and provides excellent biodegradability.
