The reductase in the intestinal villous epithelial cells converts calcium ions in calcium aspartate into zero-valent calcium and circulates through the blood. Calcium atoms are transported to the site where calcium is needed, while aspartic acid is treated with transamination to quickly form a variety of amino acids that the body needs.
